Bruno Guimaraes admits Newcastle were nervous before beating Chelsea 2-0 at St James’ Park

Despite the lack of concern on the pitch, the Magpies took an early lead when Sandro Tonali fired the Magpies ahead in the second minute.

Guimaraes then sealed a stoppage-time win to give them a shot at a Champions League place next season.

Guimaraes admitted in his post-match press conference that the team were nervous before the game, saying:

“Of course it’s normal to be nervous. It’s the end of the season, anything can happen. But I think we have a positive outlook.”

Guimaraes also believed his goal was a “special” one that would lift Newcastle’s spirits after Chelsea’s second-half defeat, and urged the fans to support the team in the final stretch.

“We should have scored the second goal early on but we missed a lot of chances,” Guimaraes added.

“Finally we won 2-0, it’s okay, we didn’t concede, we scored two goals, now let’s try to continue, we are very happy. 2-0 is very good but we lost a little bit of possession in the second half and we gave them too much time, but a victory is a victory.”

“We scored early and late, it was special for me to score today because it’s Mother’s Day in Brazil, it’s very important, but now we have to keep fighting with two games left. Overall, I am very happy.”
